shit i like
Food
Obviously, I like baking and cooking. This blog just wouldn’t make sense otherwise. I’ve got a big sweet tooth, but enjoy well-cooked food just as much. And as I’ve mentioned in many instances, I’ve battled with food and the resulting weight all my life. It’s still unbelievably hard being good all the time, and so I’ve still got a long road ahead. Hopefully this road will not be littered with cupcake papers.
Rock ‘n’ roll
It’s no secret—I mean, hell, it’s in the name of this blog. But RNR is a subjective thing these days: is it just the stuff made in the 1950s and 1960s? Does the music being made today count as RNR? If Elvis is rock ‘n’ roll, are the Rolling Stones? What about Guns ‘n Roses? To be honest, I don’t care. Some people get mired in categories, subcategories, cult phenomena and stupid terminology. When I say I like RNR, I mean I like it all, and then some. And I don’t just love rock ‘n’ roll either, but then that gets into the categorical nonsense I just railed against above, so I’ll spare you. Anyway, two of my favourite local acts are on opposite ends of the musical spectrum—United Steelworkers of Montreal and Barn Burner. Click on the links to hear ‘em.
In the ten years or so that I’ve been an active member of the Montreal music scene, I’ve also met lots of great people. Here are some of the (still active) bands those people are in: Trigger Effect, The Great Sabatini, Endast, Matchless, The Hypnophonics, Tailgunner, The Brains, The Ripcordz, Truth or Scare, Rockhard, Holy Divide. You Google ‘em.
Tattoos
It really is as they say: one leads to two, and two leads to twenty. So far, I’ve got 11 of ‘em (I think?!). Of course, I’ve got the ones I wish I didn’t have; you know the ones—the ones you get in your youth ’cause you’re just so fucking awesome. Yeah. Oh well! I like to think the ones I’ve acquired in the past six years or so are far more awesome, and with an artist like Nat at Imago, how could I be in the wrong hands?
The written word
I wear many hats in life, one of them being that of a freelance journalist. However, because I (thankfully) have a good full-time job, I don’t write nearly as much these days as I used to. But it’s a true love of mine, and I intend to return to it once I’ve got other matters settled, though I’m not sure how I’ll resume writing. More journalism? Perhaps more editing and less writing? Books? Magazines? Newspapers? Who knows.
In terms of reading others’ words, well I have a few favourite authors. Though I was disappointed with his most recent book, Chuck Klosterman is still pretty awesome. And the two books of Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and Zeitoun) I’ve read thus far were impressive, emotional and entertaining.
Funny Internet shit
It’s true. I totally have RSS feeds for a lot of the Cheezburger network sites (Failblog, Failbook, Bad Tattoos, etc.), as well as Passive-Aggressive Notes. It’s a welcome distraction when I’m tearing my hair out whilst sitting at my desk.
